This fine Malachite specimen comes from the historic Sa Duchessa Mine in Domusnovas, southwestern Sardinia, a locality once mined for zinc, lead and copper ores. The piece is dominated by a dense, well-formed mammillary crystallization: rounded, botryoidal masses of Malachite grow in tightly packed clusters, building a smooth yet textured surface typical of the species when it forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zone of copper deposits.

The color is an intense, saturated green, evenly distributed across the mammillary surface, and it stands out beautifully against the surrounding matrix, creating a natural contrast that draws the eye immediately to the specimen. The overall composition is notably balanced: the crystallization covers the matrix in a harmonious way, without empty or awkward areas, giving the piece a pleasing symmetry that is often difficult to find in botryoidal Malachite specimens of this size.

Measuring 118 x 101 x 90 mm and weighing 673 g, this is a substantial cabinet-sized piece, solid and well-proportioned, suitable both for a systematic mineral collection and for display. The Sa Duchessa Mine has been inactive for decades, its underground workings and processing plant now abandoned, which adds historical and collecting significance to specimens originating from this site.

Malachite is a hydrous copper carbonate that typically forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zones of copper ore deposits, precipitating from copper-bearing solutions circulating through fractures and cavities in the host rock. Its signature vivid green color is caused directly by the copper Cu2+ ion within the mineral structure, which acts as a strong chromophore; the intensity and shade of green can vary slightly depending on the local concentration of copper and the conditions of crystallization.

Malachite rarely develops well-formed individual crystals; instead it most commonly grows as botryoidal or mammillary aggregates, made up of tightly packed, rounded masses built from radiating fibrous crystallites. This growth habit produces the smooth, rounded surface and, when cut, the characteristic concentric banding for which the species is famous. The specimen described here displays exactly this mammillary habit, forming a compact, well-distributed crust over the matrix.

The Sa Duchessa Mine, from which this piece originates, is a historic Zn-Pb-Cu deposit near Domusnovas, Sardinia, mined from the second half of the 19th century until its closure in the early 1970s. The mine is now abandoned, and its dumps and old workings have become the main remaining source of mineral specimens from the site.

The Sa Duchessa Mine, located in the Oridda valley near Domusnovas, was worked for over a century, initially for zinc ores and later for copper minerals as the original deposits became depleted. Mining operations ceased in the early 1970s, and the site, including the ruins of its historic wash plant, has since been abandoned, making well-formed specimens from this locality increasingly difficult to find on the market today.
