The crystals sit on a matrix composed of radiating, needle-like aggregates of Hedenbergite, often described by collectors as 'green rays' for their fan-like, sheaf-shaped growth pattern. This specimen combines two mineral species that formed together in a contact-metamorphic (skarn) environment: Quartz, in its green Prase variety, and Hedenbergite, a calcium-iron pyroxene. The intense green color of the Prase Quartz is not due to a chromophore element within the quartz lattice itself, but is caused by abundant fibrous mineral inclusions distributed through the crystal structure — commonly reported in the trade as hedenbergite and/or actinolite fibers, though mineralogical studies have more consistently confirmed actinolite-group amphibole as the responsible inclusion in most analyzed prase material. These fibrous inclusions interfere with normal crystal growth, which is why prase crystals often display somewhat irregular or elongated crystal terminations rather than perfectly sharp quartz points.

The dark, radiating matrix on which the crystals sit is composed of Hedenbergite, whose own green-to-black coloration comes directly from Fe2+ iron occupying a structural site within its pyroxene chain silicate framework — a classic case of a transition metal acting as a true chromophore, unlike the inclusion-based color of the quartz above it. The radiating, sheaf-like growth habit of the hedenbergite is typical of pyroxene crystallization in skarn deposits, where crystals grow outward from nucleation points in bundles rather than as isolated individuals.
