GROSSULAR GARNET – Brown-Red Dodecahedral Crystals, Vogogna, Italy

This is an aesthetically pleasing specimen of Grossular, the calcium-aluminum member of the garnet group, collected at Sasso Bianco near Vogogna, in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province of Piedmont, Italy. The crystals show a well-defined dodecahedral habit, with sharp, evenly developed rhombic faces typical of the isometric symmetry of garnet, and are grouped together rather than occurring as a single isolated individual.

The color is an intense brownish-red, a tone that stands out vividly against the pale, light-colored crystalline matrix on which the crystals are set, giving the piece a strong chromatic contrast that enhances its display value. Sasso Bianco is known among Italian collectors for garnet-bearing zones hosted in carbonate-silicate rocks, locally referred to in the past as calciphyres, an environment typical of contact or regional metamorphism of impure limestones where grossular commonly forms alongside minerals such as clinozoisite.

The specimen is completely natural and untreated, with no artificial enhancement of color or form. Grossular is a calcium-aluminum silicate belonging to the garnet group (ugrandite series), crystallizing in the cubic system and typically forming rhombododecahedral or, more rarely, trapezohedral crystals. It forms through contact or regional metamorphism of impure, calcium-rich limestones and calc-silicate rocks, where calcium and aluminum-bearing minerals recrystallize under heat and pressure, an environment consistent with the carbonate-silicate outcrops documented at Sasso Bianco.

The brown-red color of this specimen is caused by iron substituting for aluminum within the garnet structure: ferric and ferrous iron act as chromophores, and depending on their concentration and oxidation state they can produce shades ranging from yellow and orange to deep brown and red, as seen here. Pure, iron-free grossular is instead colorless or white, which highlights how sensitive this species is to even small amounts of trace elements.

The name Grossular derives from the Latin botanical term for gooseberry, 'grossularia', inspired by the pale greenish crystals first described from Siberia, even though the species is now known to display one of the widest color ranges of any garnet, from colorless and white to green, yellow, orange, red and brown.

Sasso Bianco, near Vogogna in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province, is a well-known Piedmontese collecting locality where garnet-enriched zones occur within carbonate-silicate rocks, historically nicknamed calciphyres by local collectors, alongside associated minerals such as clinozoisite. The sharp rhombododecahedral form seen on this specimen is one of the most characteristic and easily recognizable crystal shapes in the entire garnet group.
