This is a fine, fully natural Goethite specimen from the historic Su Zurfuru Mine in Fluminimaggiore, one of the classic mining districts of south-western Sardinia. The piece displays the typical botryoidal habit of the species: a compact crust of rounded, grape-like globules formed by radiating, sub-microscopic fibrous crystals that grew together into a smooth, mammillary surface rather than developing as distinct, individually visible crystal faces.

The coloration is one of the specimen's strongest features: broad areas move from a warm golden-brown to a deep, almost submetallic black, giving the piece real depth and contrast under raking light. Across limited zones of the botryoidal crust, a soft iridescent sheen of green and gold appears, the kind of shimmering, oil-on-water effect long associated with iron oxide-hydroxide minerals of this type.

The Su Zurfuru Mine was historically worked for lead and zinc sulfides, with mining activity going back to the late nineteenth century under British-led management before later Italian operation. The deposit is best known among collectors for its exceptional fluorite, but it also produced attractive secondary oxidation-zone minerals such as this Goethite. The mine is no longer in production and has since been preserved as a mining heritage site, which adds to the historical and collecting interest of specimens sourced from it.

Goethite is an iron oxide-hydroxide mineral, one of the most widespread iron-bearing species on Earth, typically forming in the oxidation zone of iron and sulfide deposits through the weathering of primary minerals such as pyrite, siderite, and marcasite. In this specimen it occurs in its classic botryoidal habit: a crust of tightly packed, rounded globules built from radiating fibrous microcrystals rather than well-formed individual crystals.

The color of Goethite is directly tied to its composition: the golden-brown to near-black, submetallic tones result from the iron (Fe3+) held within its oxide-hydroxide structure, with darker, more metallic zones generally corresponding to a more compact, denser crystal fabric. The localized iridescent sheen of green and gold seen on parts of this piece is a separate optical phenomenon, caused by an ultra-thin surface film in which goethite and hematite intergrow (historically termed 'turgite'); light reflecting off the top and bottom of this microscopic film interferes, producing the shifting, oil-on-water colors typical of fine iridescent Goethite specimens.

The Su Zurfuru Mine, where this specimen originates, was historically exploited for lead-zinc sulfide ores and is no longer active; it has since been converted into a preserved mining heritage site open to visitors.

Goethite was named in 1806 in honor of the German writer and naturalist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was also an avid mineral collector. It is one of the most common iron-bearing minerals on Earth, forming through the weathering and oxidation of other iron-rich minerals, and it is a major constituent of many soils, laterites, and gossans capping sulfide ore bodies.

The rainbow-like sheen seen on the finest botryoidal Goethite specimens, historically nicknamed 'turgite' by early mineralogists, is caused by an extremely thin surface layer where goethite and hematite intergrow, producing thin-film light interference similar to that of a soap bubble or an oil slick.

The Su Zurfuru Mine has a long documented history: exploration began in the late 1870s under the entrepreneur George Henfrey, and by 1889 the concession passed to the Victoria Mining Company Limited. Since 2016, the site has been opened to the public for guided visits organized by a local cultural association dedicated to preserving its mining heritage.
