This is a striking cluster of Gypsum crystals in the Selenite variety, showing a distinctive dark grey coloration and an unusual genetic history that sets it apart from most gypsum specimens found in nature.

The piece is composed of numerous well-developed crystals, generously sized, showing lenticular to prismatic habits with the characteristic pearly-to-vitreous luster of gypsum along the cleavage planes. The overall aggregate displays a pleasing structural balance, with crystals radiating and interlocking to create a compact, aesthetically cohesive cluster rather than a loose or fragmentary group.

What makes this specimen especially interesting to collectors is its formation environment: these are so-called neoformation gypsum crystals, grown not through classic sedimentary evaporite processes but on the internal walls of industrial pipes used to transport saturated salt brine from the historic halite deposits of Buriano and the Saline di Volterra to the Solvay soda ash plant at Rosignano Solvay, in the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo, Livorno Province, Tuscany. Despite this unusual, human-made setting, the crystallization process itself followed entirely natural physical and chemical laws, producing genuine, well-formed gypsum crystals - a curious case of secondary (authigenic) mineral growth in an anthropogenic environment.

The dark grey tone of the crystals, quite different from the more familiar colorless or white gypsum/selenite found in natural evaporite deposits, adds a further layer of visual and scientific interest, making this a distinctive addition to any systematic or locality-based mineral collection.

Gypsum is a hydrous calcium sulfate belonging to the sulfate mineral class, and the Selenite variety refers to well-formed, cleavable crystals with a characteristic pearly to vitreous luster - a name derived from the Greek word for the Moon, in reference to the soft, moon-like sheen of its cleavage faces.

This particular specimen represents a rather unusual genetic type known as neoformation (or authigenic) gypsum: rather than crystallizing within a natural sedimentary evaporite basin, it grew on the internal walls of industrial pipelines that transported saturated calcium sulfate-bearing brine from the historic salt deposits of Buriano and the Saline di Volterra to the Solvay soda ash plant at Rosignano Solvay. As the solution circulated and calcium sulfate reached saturation, gypsum crystallized directly onto the metal pipe surfaces, following entirely natural physical-chemical laws despite the artificial setting.

The dark grey coloration seen in this specimen, distinct from the typically colorless or white appearance of natural selenite, is generally attributed to the incorporation of fine iron oxide-hydroxide particles and other metallic or organic residues present in the pipe walls and brine solution at the time of crystal growth, rather than to a structural chromophore element within the gypsum lattice itself.
