Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline variety of quartz (SiO2), composed of extremely fine fibrous crystals arranged in a compact, microscopic aggregate rather than as visible individual crystals. This structure gives the material its characteristic waxy to dull luster and its typical conchoidal fracture.
The grey tone of this specimen reflects the naturally pure, unstained silica commonly found in unaltered chalcedony, while the pale yellow zones are caused by trace amounts of iron oxide impurities incorporated into the silica structure during crystallization - a well documented cause of yellow and brown coloration in chalcedony and related quartz varieties.
The botryoidal, mammillary habit displayed here is typical of chalcedony that formed from silica-rich fluids slowly depositing in successive layers on the walls of a cavity within volcanic rock, producing the rounded, grape-like lobes visible on the surface.
The Ploaghe area, near Sassari in northern Sardinia, lies within a belt of Miocene to Plio-Pleistocene volcanic rocks, and local quarries opened in this volcanic sequence remain active, continuing to yield chalcedony, agate and associated minerals.
