This is a fine example of Aragonite from the famous Tazouta diggings near Sefrou, in the Fès-Meknès Region of Morocco. Despite being widely known in the trade as the 'Tazouta mine', mineralogical references clarify that no true mining ever took place here: the aragonite is collected from an open outcrop, which is why the locality name Tazouta diggings is considered more accurate.

The specimen shows the star-like habit that has made this locality celebrated among collectors worldwide, sometimes nicknamed 'sputnik' aragonite for its radiating, satellite-like symmetry. Elongated prismatic crystals extend outward from a central point of origin, interlocking through cyclic twinning to build a pseudo-hexagonal, star-shaped cluster. Each individual crystal displays glossy, well-defined faces with sharp edges, giving the whole specimen a bright, almost gemmy luster.

The warm orange-brown coloration is characteristic of Aragonite from this part of Morocco and is caused by iron oxide inclusions incorporated into the crystal structure during growth, rather than by the calcium carbonate itself, which is naturally colorless. This iron staining is what gives Tazouta aragonite its distinctive rust to honey-brown palette, quite different from the white or pale varieties found elsewhere.

Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral and, together with calcite, one of the two common natural polymorphs of CaCO3 sharing an identical chemical formula but crystallizing in different systems. This specimen displays the orthorhombic habit typical of the species, built from elongated prismatic crystals that have grown outward from a shared nucleation point.

The most distinctive feature of this piece is its cyclic twinning: three individual crystals have intergrown around a common axis to form a pseudo-hexagonal, star-like trilling, a habit for which the Tazouta locality in Morocco is particularly renowned among collectors. The warm orange-brown color is due to iron oxide inclusions trapped within the crystal structure during growth, since pure calcium carbonate itself is colorless; the amount of iron staining directly controls the depth of the rust to honey-brown tones seen here. Aragonite can occasionally show weak fluorescence under ultraviolet light, though this has not been specifically tested on this specimen, so it should be treated as an unverified, secondary characteristic rather than a confirmed trait of this particular piece.

In older literature and on vintage specimen labels, the site sometimes appears under its earlier names, Tagnaneit or Takaneit.

Aragonite and calcite share the exact same chemical formula, calcium carbonate, yet they crystallize into two completely different structures. Aragonite forms in the orthorhombic system, and its tendency to grow as three individuals twinned together into a single pseudo-hexagonal shape is one of the most recognizable party tricks in the mineral world. On a broader scale, this same mineral is quietly at work inside seashells and pearls, where thin aragonite layers create the shimmering nacre so prized in jewelry.

In crystal healing traditions, Aragonite is considered a grounding stone, associated with the Root and Sacral Chakras.
