Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz, silicon dioxide (SiO₂), and its distinctive purple color is caused by trace amounts of iron impurities substituting for silicon within the crystal lattice, combined with prolonged natural irradiation over geological time. This process converts some of the iron ions from Fe³⁺ toward an Fe⁴⁺ oxidation state, creating optically active color centers within the quartz structure that absorb specific wavelengths of light and produce the characteristic violet-purple hue seen in this specimen.

The crystals in this specimen display the elongated, glassy, sharply terminated prismatic habit that made the Piedra Parada deposit internationally renowned among quartz localities, with an aesthetic, well-balanced arrangement across the matrix.
