BLACK QUARTZ – Very Dark Smoky Quartz with golden PYRITE and DOLOMITE, Romania

Exceptional natural Quartz, Dolomite and Pyrite specimen from the Cavnic Mine, Maramureș County, Romania. This remarkable mineral association is characterized by a compact and highly developed crystal formation featuring dark quartz crystals partially covered by light dolomite, combined with a striking spherical aggregation of metallic pyrite. The strong contrast between blackish quartz, golden pyrite and pale pink-white dolomite creates a highly scenic and visually dynamic composition. The specimen shows excellent crystal definition, depth and three-dimensional structure, making it highly desirable for advanced mineral collections and high-end display pieces. Its size, mineral complexity and classic Romanian locality enhance its value and aesthetic appeal.

Quartz is a silicate mineral composed of silicon dioxide with the chemical formula SiO₂ and belongs to the tectosilicate group, crystallizing in the trigonal system. Dolomite is a carbonate mineral with the chemical formula CaMg(CO₃)₂ and crystallizes in the trigonal system. Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral with the chemical formula FeS₂ and crystallizes in the cubic (isometric) system. These minerals commonly form together in hydrothermal systems where silica-rich, carbonate-rich and sulfur-bearing fluids interact under varying physicochemical conditions, producing complex multi-mineral assemblages.

• Chemical formula: SiO₂ (Quartz), CaMg(CO₃)₂ (Dolomite), FeS₂ (Pyrite)
• Mineral class: Silicates, Carbonates, Sulfides
• Crystal system: Trigonal (Quartz, Dolomite), Cubic (Pyrite)
• Formation: Hydrothermal veins with mixed silica-carbonate-sulfide fluids
• Key elements: Silicon (Si), Oxygen (O), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Iron (Fe), Sulfur (S), Carbon (C)
• Crystal habit: Quartz crystals with dolomite coating and pyrite aggregates
• Color: Dark grey/black, white-pink, metallic gold

Pyrite often forms spherical or botryoidal aggregates in hydrothermal environments, especially when iron-rich fluids crystallize rapidly under fluctuating temperature and chemical conditions.

Black Quartz, also known as smoky quartz, is traditionally associated with grounding, protection and the release of negative energy. In crystal healing traditions it is believed to support mental clarity and emotional stability, helping to anchor scattered thoughts and promote a calm, focused state of mind during stressful periods.

This piece from Cavnic Mine, Romania, combines very dark smoky quartz with pale dolomite and metallic golden pyrite, creating a striking three-color contrast. The deep, near-black tones of the quartz connect it to the Root chakra, said to bring stability and a sense of security, while the golden pyrite is believed to support confidence and personal power, linking the specimen to the Solar Plexus chakra as well.

These interpretations are not scientifically proven.

Chakra: Root, Solar Plexus
