This is a striking specimen of Smithsonite from the San Giovanni Mine, one of the most historically important lead-zinc mining sites of the Iglesiente district in south-western Sardinia. The piece is entirely natural and untreated, and stands out for its unusual morphology: rather than the typical botryoidal crusts for which the species is best known, this specimen grew as a distinctive crest-shaped ridge, formed by numerous pointed crystals aligned side by side, giving the piece a dramatic, scenic silhouette.

The surface texture varies noticeably across the specimen: some faces are smooth and translucent, allowing light to pass through the thin crystal edges, while other areas show a rougher, drusy micro-crystalline crust typical of secondary growth phases. The overall color palette moves between warm beige and hazelnut tones, a combination that gives the piece a soft, earthy elegance rather than the intense yellow more commonly associated with Sardinian material from this district.

The San Giovanni Mine, located near Bindua in the municipality of Iglesias, was worked for over a century and was among the last mines of the Iglesiente mining basin to remain active, finally ceasing production in 1998. The site is now part of Sardinia's Geomining Park, a UNESCO-recognized heritage area, and no further extraction takes place there, which makes fresh specimens increasingly difficult to find on the collector's market. This combination of a depleted, historic locality and an atypical crystal habit makes the piece a distinctive addition to any systematic or aesthetic mineral collection.
