This specimen showcases a beautiful cluster of yellow Fluorite cubes from the Moscona Mine, one of the most productive and best-known fluorite localities in the Villabona mining district of Asturias, Spain. The crystals display the classic cubic habit for which this deposit is famous, with sharp, well-defined faces and edges that create a strong geometric presence and a pleasing balance between form and color.

The intense golden-yellow coloration is typical of this locality, where fluorite is found in stratiform layers with an almost total predominance of yellow tones, occasionally interrupted by rarer violet-blue pockets. The cubic crystals sit on matrix, showing good luster and translucency that enhance the visual depth of the piece and give it a genuine collector-grade aesthetic appeal.

One of the most fascinating features of this specimen is its reaction under ultraviolet light: when exposed to UV, the yellow fluorite turns an intense white glow, a well-documented behavior for fluorite from this deposit. This optical property, combined with the historic pedigree of the Moscona Mine, adds both scientific interest and display value to the piece.

The Moscona Mine, located in El Pontón de Solís within the municipality of Corvera de Asturias, is still an active operation run by the Minersa company, making it one of the few Spanish fluorite mines still in production today, unlike many of the historic Villabona-area workings that have long since closed.

Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, a halide mineral built from calcium and fluorine ions in a simple cubic structure. Its intense yellow color in specimens from the Moscona Mine is attributed mainly to organic impurities trapped within the crystal lattice during growth, a coloring mechanism distinct from the color centers responsible for the purples and blues seen in fluorite from other Asturian deposits such as Berbes.

The crystals grew with a well-developed cubic habit, a natural expression of the mineral's isometric crystal system, forming stratiform deposits within Permo-Triassic sedimentary sequences typical of the Villabona mining district. Under ultraviolet light, this yellow fluorite characteristically fluoresces white, a documented response for the Moscona locality caused by the same organic activator responsible for its daylight color; as always, we recommend verifying the exact fluorescent response with a UV lamp, since intensity can vary slightly between individual pieces.

Stokes studied the way fluorite glows under ultraviolet light and coined the term 'fluorescence' after the mineral itself, making fluorite the very reference point for this optical property still studied today.

The Moscona Mine was registered in 1968 and later taken over by the Minersa company in 1977, making it a comparatively 'young' addition to the long history of Asturian fluorite mining, yet it went on to become one of the most productive fluorite deposits in Spain, prized by collectors for its yellow cubic crystals often associated with calcite, baryte, dolomite and pyrite.

Unlike many nearby historic workings in the Villabona mining district that have since closed, Moscona remains active today, continuing to supply both industrial-grade fluorite and fine mineral specimens to collectors worldwide.
