Unlike the stubby, geode-hosted amethyst crystals typical of Brazil and Uruguay, Veracruz amethyst is prized precisely for its long, slender, glassy crystals, a growth habit almost unique among the world's major amethyst sources. Since the late 1990s, the depletion of the easily accessible surface veins, combined with periods of regional instability, has sharply reduced large-scale mining, making fine modern specimens increasingly harder to obtain.
