SIDERITE & MAGNESITE – Golden Disc-Shaped Crystals, Morro Velho Mine, Brazil

This aesthetic specimen combines golden-brown Siderite with brilliant white Magnesite in a genuinely harmonious composition, fully natural and untouched. The piece is well balanced on all sides, making it equally rewarding to display from multiple angles - a quality collectors particularly value in combination specimens.

The Siderite forms the classic disc-shaped, tabular crystals for which the Morro Velho locality is historically renowned, their warm golden-to-honey-brown tone catching the light with a distinctly vitreous luster. Alongside them, the Magnesite crystals show a crisp, bright habit that sharpens the visual contrast against the darker iron carbonate, giving the whole piece a lively, layered texture rather than a flat or monotone appearance.

The specimen comes from the Morro Velho Mine complex in Nova Lima, Minas Gerais - one of the most storied mining districts in Brazil and, historically, the world's oldest continuously worked gold mine, with operations dating back to 1725. The classic siderite material this locality is best known among collectors for was chiefly recovered from the older Mina Velha and Mina Grande underground workings, both of which have long since been closed and worked out, the deeper Mina Grande abandoned in the late 1990s and Mina Velha shutting down in the early 2000s. Fine siderite combination pieces of this kind are therefore tied to a historic, no-longer-productive occurrence, adding a genuine layer of scarcity and collectible interest.

A compact yet visually rich specimen, well suited to a refined mineralogical collection or as a decorative accent in a considered interior display.
