This lepidolite specimen comes from Minas Gerais, Brazil, one of the world's most productive lithium-pegmatite provinces, historically famous for lepidolite, spodumene, petalite and gem tourmaline. The piece shows the mineral perfectly crystallized in a vivid violet hue, with individual cleavage faces and thin platy sheets stacked closely together in the classic 'book' arrangement typical of this lithium mica.

The overall form is that of a compact, well-defined plate, only 6 mm thick, in which the flaky, pearly-lustrous crystal faces can be appreciated from multiple angles as the light catches each layer. This tabular, sheet-like habit is a defining characteristic of lepidolite, a member of the mica group of phyllosilicates that forms during the final, most evolved stages of lithium-rich granite pegmatite crystallization.

The intense purple-violet color is not caused by the lithium content itself, but by trace amounts of manganese (Mn³⁺) substituting for aluminum within the mica's crystal lattice — a classic example of an allochromatic color mechanism in minerals. This coloring, combined with the sharp definition of the crystal faces and the good size of the plate, gives the specimen strong aesthetic appeal and genuine collector interest, ideal for display or for a specialized mica/lithium-mineral collection.

Lepidolite is a lithium-rich mica belonging to the phyllosilicate class, part of the polylithionite-trilithionite series within the mica group. It typically forms as a late-stage mineral in lithium-enriched granite pegmatites, often crystallizing after earlier lithium minerals such as spodumene or petalite break down under hydrothermal conditions during the final cooling of the pegmatite melt.

The vivid violet-purple color seen in this specimen is not due to lithium, which almost never acts as a coloring agent in minerals, but to trace amounts of manganese (Mn³⁺) substituting for aluminum within the crystal structure — a well-documented allochromatic color mechanism confirmed for pink-to-purple lepidolite and lithian muscovite. The crystals display the classic tabular, platy habit of the mica group, growing in stacked sheets or 'books' held together by relatively weak potassium bonds, which also accounts for the mineral's perfect basal cleavage and pearly luster.

Lepidolite was first described in 1792 by the German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth, who named it from the Greek words for 'scale' and 'stone', referring to its flaky, layered appearance. For much of the twentieth century it served as an important ore of lithium metal, and it can also yield traces of the rarer alkali metals rubidium and caesium.

Minas Gerais is one of the largest lithium-tin pegmatite districts in Brazil, and its pegmatites have produced not only fine lepidolite but also spodumene, petalite, amblygonite and some of the world's most celebrated gem tourmalines, making the region a benchmark locality for lithium-bearing minerals.

In crystal healing traditions, lepidolite is often called the 'peace stone' or the 'grandmother stone', valued for its supposedly calming and nurturing energy. It is associated with the heart, throat, third eye and crown chakras, and is traditionally used to encourage emotional balance, ease anxiety, and support restful sleep during periods of change or transition.
