This is an aesthetically striking single crystal of Gypsum from the Midelt Province, in the Drâa-Tafilalet Region of central Morocco. What makes this specimen particularly interesting is its habit: instead of the typical thin, tabular or bladed form usually associated with the species, this crystal has grown into a compact, blocky shape that closely resembles a true cube, an unusual and visually striking form for Gypsum.

The six main faces are well developed, flat and highly reflective, catching the light beautifully and showing fine natural growth striations across their surface. This level of face definition, combined with the overall geometric balance of the piece, gives the specimen strong display value and makes it a rewarding subject for close examination under raking light.

The crystal is pure white and lustrous throughout, with a vitreous to slightly pearly sheen typical of well-formed Gypsum. The Midelt area, and in particular the nearby Mibladen mining district, is world famous among collectors mainly for its vanadinite, cerussite and baryte, but the same evaporitic geological setting has also produced fine Gypsum crystals such as this one, formed within layers of marls and sandstones associated with the region's mineralized basins.

Historic lead mining in the wider Mibladen district ceased in the 1970s, and today mineral specimens from the area are recovered mainly through small-scale, semi-artisanal digging rather than industrial extraction, which adds an extra layer of interest to material coming out of this historic Moroccan mining region.

Gypsum is a hydrated calcium sulfate, one of the most common sulfate minerals on Earth, typically forming through the evaporation of calcium- and sulfate-rich waters in evaporitic basins. In the Midelt Province, deposits of this kind occur within layers of marls and sandstones associated with the region's mineralized basins, the same broad geological setting that has made the nearby Mibladen district famous for its secondary lead minerals.

The pure white color of this crystal is due to the near-total absence of transition-metal or organic chromophore impurities within the calcium sulfate structure: with no elements capable of absorbing visible light selectively, the crystal reflects and transmits light across the spectrum almost evenly, producing a clean white appearance further enhanced by its vitreous, slightly pearly luster.

Crystallographically, Gypsum belongs to the monoclinic system and most commonly grows as thin tabular, bladed or lenticular crystals, frequently twinned in swallowtail or dovetail patterns. This specimen, however, displays an unusually blocky, nearly equant habit in which several crystal faces have developed in close proportion to one another, producing an external shape that closely mimics a cube despite the underlying monoclinic symmetry of the lattice, a curious and aesthetically appealing growth variation rather than a typical form for the species.
