This is a fine example of twinned Aragonite from Minglanilla, in the province of Cuenca, Castile-La Mancha — one of the most celebrated Spanish localities for this species. The specimen is built from cyclic twins repeated on the {110} crystallographic plane, an intergrowth that forces the naturally orthorhombic crystals into a striking pseudo-hexagonal, prismatic outline. Several individual crystals have grown together in this arrangement, forming a compact cluster whose well-defined faces catch the light with a glassy, vitreous luster.

The coloration ranges across purple, lilac and brown tones, a hallmark of aragonite from this district. Each specimen therefore carries its own individual tonal character, often more saturated toward the crystal cores and paler toward the terminations, a contrast that adds depth and visual interest to the piece.

Aragonite from Minglanilla forms within clay-rich sedimentary deposits, where circulating mineral-bearing fluids favored the slow growth of these well-shaped, twinned crystals before careful hand extraction from the soft host material. The Aragonite from Minglanilla owes its distinctive appearance to a phenomenon known as cyclic twinning. It results instead from the incorporation of trace impurities — chiefly strontium, together with magnesium and occasionally lead or zinc — into the calcium carbonate lattice during crystal growth, acting as coloring agents that tint the structure in shades of violet, lilac and brown.

Aragonite shares its chemical formula, calcium carbonate, with the mineral calcite, yet the two form completely different crystal structures — aragonite is orthorhombic, while calcite is trigonal. The species takes its name from Molina de Aragón, in nearby Guadalajara, Spain, where it was first described in 1797. The twinned crystals from Minglanilla, in the neighboring province of Cuenca, have nonetheless become independently famous among collectors worldwide for their symmetrical, star-like cyclic twin habit.
