RUBY CRYSTALS – Red Corundum from Madagascar – UV Reactive Hexagonal Crystals

Ruby is the red variety of the mineral Corundum composed of aluminum oxide with the chemical formula Al₂O₃. It belongs to the oxide mineral class and crystallizes in the trigonal system. It forms in high-grade metamorphic environments rich in aluminum, often associated with gneisses and marbles. Its red coloration is caused by trace amounts of chromium substituting aluminum in the crystal structure, and some specimens show strong red fluorescence under UV light.

  • Chemical formula: Al₂O₃
  • Mineral class: Oxides
  • Crystal system: Trigonal
  • Formation: Metamorphic and magmatic environments rich in aluminum and chromium-bearing fluids
  • Key elements: Aluminum (Al), Oxygen (O), Chromium (Cr)
  • Cause of color: Chromium substitution in crystal lattice
  • Fluorescence: Strong red UV fluorescence (in selected specimens)
