This is a beautifully formed cluster of smoky quartz crystals accompanied by vivid green chlorite, collected from the high alpine terrain near the Oberaar Glacier in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland, one of the most celebrated high-altitude collecting grounds for classic Swiss Alpine quartz. The specimen displays an excellent natural contrast between the grayish-brown body color of the smoky quartz and the intense green of the chlorite that dusts several of the crystal faces.

The quartz crystals are well individualized within the cluster, showing clean prismatic faces and rhombohedral terminations, allowing the geometry and symmetry of the crystal faces to be fully appreciated. The naturally grown crystals display an even, well-saturated color typical of quartz that developed slowly inside a mountain cavity, and the overall formation and habit of the group is particularly attractive.

The green chlorite, a soft platy silicate mineral that in these Alpine pockets typically crystallizes after the quartz at lower temperatures, appears here as a fine coating partially covering the crystal surfaces - a classic association for material coming from the Oberaar Glacier area, a remote high-mountain locality historically worked by local Swiss crystal hunters known as Strahler.

A superb piece for mineralogical collections and display, and for anyone who appreciates the natural beauty of Alpine minerals, including those interested in the traditional crystal healing and lithotherapy associations of smoky quartz and chlorite.

This specimen combines two silicate minerals with very different crystal chemistry and growth histories. Quartz (SiO2) is a tectosilicate built from a continuous three-dimensional framework of SiO4 tetrahedra, while chlorite is a phyllosilicate group mineral with a sheet-like structure that incorporates magnesium, iron and aluminum between its silicate layers.

The grayish-brown smoky color of the quartz is caused by natural gamma irradiation acting over geological time on trace aluminum impurities built into the crystal lattice, which generates color centers responsible for the characteristic smoky tone. This type of coloration is typical of quartz grown in Alpine-type fissures within granite and gneiss, host rocks that carry enough natural radioactive trace elements to trigger this effect. The green color of the chlorite, by contrast, comes from its iron and magnesium content within its layered silicate structure.

Both minerals crystallized inside an Alpine-type fissure, a cavity that opens within metamorphic host rock during the uplift and cooling of the Central Alps. Quartz typically begins crystallizing first, at relatively higher temperature, forming a clear to smoky, evenly colored crystal; chlorite then forms later, at lower temperature, settling onto the already-formed quartz faces as a fine green dust or icing, which can be observed directly on this specimen.

The area around the Oberaar Glacier, in the Guttannen municipality of the Bernese Alps, is one of the most celebrated high-altitude collecting grounds for Swiss Alpine quartz. For generations, local Strahler - the traditional Swiss crystal hunters, some of whose families have worked these mountains for generations - have searched narrow Alpine-type clefts hidden in the granite and gneiss of the Aar massif for fine smoky quartz, chlorite, adularia, and even pink fluorite.

These clefts form as deeply buried rock is slowly uplifted and cooled during the building of the Alps, allowing hot mineral-rich fluids to deposit quartz and accessory minerals inside open cavities over long periods of time. Because such pockets are small, isolated, and located in extremely remote and often glaciated high-mountain terrain, each find is essentially unique, making genuine Oberaar Glacier specimens a distinctive addition to any Alpine mineral collection.

Smoky quartz is traditionally associated with grounding, protection, and the release of negative or stagnant energy, and is often said by crystal healing practitioners to help transmute stress and tension into a sense of calm and stability. Green chlorite is traditionally linked to cleansing and renewal, believed by some to support the detoxification of the energy field and to encourage emotional balance and gentle release. Together, this combination is thought to promote grounded stability while supporting emotional clearing. As with all mineral specimens, these interpretations are not scientifically proven.
