This is a genuinely appealing cluster of smoky quartz crystals from the Oberaar Glacier area, one of the most celebrated Alpine localities for this variety. The crystals show a well-developed prismatic growth with clean, legible crystal faces, allowing the collector to appreciate the geometry and natural luster of the quartz. The grayish-brown smoky body color contrasts beautifully with patches and dustings of vivid green chlorite, which coat parts of the crystal surfaces and add a lively, natural touch to the specimen.

The Oberaar Glacier area, near Guttannen in the canton of Bern, is a remote high-altitude locality within the Swiss Alps that has produced some of the world's most admired smoky quartz specimens, including twisted gwindel crystals with similar chlorite inclusions. Material from this general region of the Bernese Alps is extracted from narrow alpine fissures (clefts) opened within the crystalline gneissic bedrock, rather than from a conventional mine, and access to these remote sites is seasonal and weather-dependent, which keeps fine specimens relatively scarce on the market.

The smoky coloration of the quartz in this specimen is a genuine geological signature: trace amounts of aluminum substitute for silicon within the crystal lattice, and over geological time, natural background radiation from the surrounding rock displaces electrons around these aluminum sites, creating so-called color centers that absorb light and produce the characteristic grayish-brown smoky hue. This is a completely natural process unrelated to any treatment. The green coloration, on the other hand, comes from the chlorite coating the quartz faces: chlorite is an iron- and magnesium-bearing phyllosilicate in which ferrous iron (Fe2+) is the chromophore responsible for its typical green tone. Structurally, the quartz crystallized first, with chlorite forming as a later, lower-temperature phase that dusted and partially coated the already-formed quartz faces, which explains the patchy, textural distribution of the green color across the specimen. Both minerals formed through hydrothermal crystallization within narrow alpine fissures (clefts) opened in the metamorphic gneissic bedrock of the Bernese Alps, a slow process that allowed the quartz to develop its clean, well-defined prismatic faces.

Unlike many mineral specimens that come from underground mines, this material forms in narrow rock fissures high in the mountains, meaning every recovery depends on difficult, weather-limited alpine access rather than continuous industrial extraction.
