The piece is built from numerous elongated, blade-shaped gypsum crystals that radiate outward from a central point, fanning open in overlapping layers that closely mimic the famous 'petal' arrangement of desert rose formations found in arid regions worldwide.

What makes this specimen particularly interesting from a mineralogical standpoint is that it did not form under the classic hot-desert evaporite conditions typically associated with true desert roses. Instead, it grew within the gypsum-rich sedimentary sequences of the Northern Apennines, where selenite crystals developed a radiating, rosette-like habit through a comparable evaporitic precipitation process during the geological history of the basin. The result is a formation that is visually almost indistinguishable from a true desert rose, yet tells a different geological story tied to the ancient Mediterranean evaporite deposits of this part of Italy.
