This aesthetic quartz crystal comes from the Malenco Valley (Val Malenco), one of the most celebrated alpine mineral localities in Italy, long studied by generations of mineralogists and collectors for the exceptional variety of species found within its metamorphic and serpentinite-rich rocks.

The crystal is doubly terminated, with well-formed rhombohedral faces capping both ends of the prism. Remarkably, one of the two terminations divides into two distinct points, a split (bifurcated) termination that stands out as an unusual and visually striking feature, increasing both the aesthetic appeal and the mineralogical interest of the piece.

The body of the crystal shows good transparency and a bright vitreous luster along its prism faces, allowing light to travel through the quartz and highlight its natural symmetry. The absence of any matrix confirms this is a floater crystal, having grown freely - most likely inside a fluid-filled alpine-type fissure - rather than anchored to host rock, a growth condition that is inherently less common and adds to the specimen's collectible value.

Quartz is a tectosilicate built from silicon and oxygen arranged in a continuous three-dimensional framework of linked SiO4 tetrahedra, crystallizing in the trigonal system within the trigonal-trapezohedral class. Pure, well-formed quartz such as this specimen owes its transparency to a highly ordered atomic lattice essentially free of trace-element impurities or structural defects that would otherwise scatter light or introduce color centers.

The specimen displays a double termination, with prism faces capped by rhombohedral faces at both ends - a habit that develops only when a crystal grows freely, unattached to the surrounding rock, typically inside a fluid-filled cavity or fissure.
