This is a genuinely aesthetic cluster of smoky quartz crystals from Courmayeur, on the Italian flank of the Mont Blanc massif in the Aosta Valley — one of the most classic and sought-after alpine localities for this quartz variety. The specimen displays numerous smoky quartz crystals of varying size clustered tightly together, many partially dusted or coated with vivid green chlorite that clings to the prism faces and terminations, creating a lovely two-tone effect against the smoky brown-gray body color of the quartz.

A dominant crystal measuring approximately 5 cm anchors the group, showing the typical hexagonal prism habit of alpine-fissure quartz with well-developed rhombohedral terminations. The entire cluster rests on a light-colored granitic matrix — a fragment of the Mont Blanc granite (technically an orthogneiss) in which these alpine clefts formed — and the pale host rock provides an excellent visual contrast that makes both the smoky crystals and the green chlorite coating stand out beautifully.

Smoky quartz from this area forms in so-called alpine-type fissures: cavities within the granite where slow crystal growth over geological time, combined with natural gamma radiation from trace radioactive elements in the surrounding rock, produced the characteristic smoky coloration. The green chlorite coating owes its color primarily to iron incorporated within its phyllosilicate crystal structure, a common secondary mineral formed through the alteration of iron- and magnesium-bearing minerals in the host granite. The crystals grew within an alpine-type fissure cut into the Mont Blanc granite, a well-documented process in which slow mineral growth inside open cavities produces well-terminated, aesthetically balanced quartz crystals, often accompanied by chlorite, adularia and other classic alpine-cleft minerals.
