This is a genuinely eye-catching specimen of Atacamite, a rare secondary copper mineral prized by mineral collectors worldwide for its intense, saturated green color. The crystals form slender prismatic and acicular blades that radiate outward from common points, creating repeated circular, pinwheel-like clusters across the specimen's surface — a growth pattern that is one of the most recognizable and photogenic habits in the mineral kingdom.

The deep emerald crystals are set against soft, pale Halloysite, a clay mineral that forms rounded, tan-white botryoidal patches; the juxtaposition of the vitreous green Atacamite against the matte white Halloysite produces a pleasing visual contrast. Traces of pseudomalachite, with its own distinctive lighter green tone, add a further layer of mineralogical interest and color variation to the piece.

The specimen comes from the La Farola Mine in the Las Pintadas mining district, near Tierra Amarilla in Chile's Atacama Region — a locality long regarded by collectors as one of the finest sources of well-formed, gemmy Atacamite crystals anywhere in the world. Material of this quality, with generous crystal size and rich mineral association, is increasingly hard to find on today's market.

Atacamite is a relatively rare secondary copper mineral, chemically a copper chloride hydroxide. Its signature deep emerald-green to blackish-green color is caused directly by copper in the Cu²⁺ oxidation state acting as a chromophore within the crystal structure — the same fundamental cause of color shared by other copper secondary minerals such as malachite and chrysocolla. Atacamite typically forms in the oxidized zones of copper sulfide deposits, and its formation specifically requires the presence of chloride-bearing solutions, which is why it is especially well developed in extremely arid, saline environments like Chile's Atacama Desert — the type region after which the mineral is named.

The specimen displays a classic radiating, sunburst crystal habit: slender prismatic to acicular crystals grow outward from common nucleation points, producing the circular, pinwheel-like sprays visible across the piece. This habit, combined with the vitreous luster and gemmy transparency of well-formed individual crystals, is considered highly desirable among collectors. The associated Halloysite, a clay-group phyllosilicate, forms as soft pale, rounded aggregates that contrast attractively with the Atacamite, while the pseudomalachite, a copper phosphate hydroxide, contributes its own lighter green hue to the color palette of the specimen. Note that Atacamite is somewhat light- and moisture-sensitive over the very long term and is best kept away from prolonged direct sunlight and stored in a dry environment to preserve its color and crystal integrity.

Interestingly, Atacamite is not confined to mineral deposits alone — it has also been documented as a natural corrosion product on ancient bronze and copper artifacts, and even as a component of the hard mineralized jaws of certain marine bristleworms. Collectors also prize combination specimens like this one, where Atacamite is found alongside Halloysite and pseudomalachite, since such multi-mineral associations are considerably less common than Atacamite on its own.

In crystal healing traditions, Atacamite is associated with emotional balance and release, said to help calm anxiety, soothe fear, and support the endocrine system.
