This is a fascinating double-sided (bifacial) specimen combining smoky quartz and hematite roses, collected from the world-famous Cavradi Gorge in the Val Curnera, Switzerland. The piece displays well-developed crystal faces on both sides, allowing collectors to appreciate the quartz's natural transparency and the sharp geometry of its terminations from multiple angles — a feature that makes this specimen especially versatile for display.

The quartz shows an even, warm smoky tone typical of material grown in Alpine-type fissures, where crystals develop slowly under stable conditions. Perched on and within the quartz are groups of tabular hematite crystals arranged in the classic rosette pattern collectors call a hematite rose, prized for their bright, almost mirror-like metallic luster and sharply defined crystal edges.

Cavradi hematites are considered a classic among alpine mineral collectors, traditionally gathered by strahlers — local alpine field collectors who search for these specimens directly in the mountain clefts, often under demanding and physically challenging conditions.

In full transparency, the specimen shows some natural internal fissures/cracks, a very common feature in alpine-fissure quartz due to the geological stresses experienced during formation. These are original growth features of the crystal and not the result of damage or repair — the piece has not been restored or altered in any way.

A genuine, entirely natural specimen of strong aesthetic value, well suited to collectors seeking a distinctive Alpine locality piece.

This specimen combines two classic Alpine-fissure minerals: quartz (variety smoky quartz) and hematite. The smoky color of the quartz is caused by a well-documented natural process: trace aluminum atoms substitute for silicon within the crystal lattice, and natural gamma irradiation over geological time displaces electrons to form color centers around these aluminum sites, producing the characteristic grey-brown to brown coloration. This process, combined with the slow, stable growth conditions typical of Alpine-type fissures, tends to produce the even, unzoned smoky coloration seen in this piece.

The hematite forms as groups of thin, tabular, trigonal crystals arranged radially in the rosette pattern known as a hematite rose, with a bright, near-metallic luster produced by the reflective surfaces of the platy crystals. Both minerals grew within an Alpine-type fissure hosted in mica schist/gneiss, a hydrothermal, low-temperature environment characteristic of the Central Alps, where slowly circulating mineral-rich fluids allowed large, well-formed crystals to develop over long periods.

Natural internal fractures, as noted in this specimen, are a common and expected feature of alpine-fissure quartz due to the tectonic stresses experienced during and after crystal growth, and do not indicate repair or damage.

The Cavradi Gorge, in the Val Curnera of the Swiss canton of Grisons, is one of the most celebrated alpine localities in the world for hematite roses — sometimes called iron roses — found together with smoky quartz. These specimens are traditionally collected by strahlers, the local alpine field collectors who search for crystal-lined clefts high in the mountains, often in remote and physically demanding terrain.

Interestingly, although quartz is a silicate and hematite is an iron oxide, both minerals crystallize in the trigonal crystal system, which contributes to the elegant, symmetrical platy shapes seen in hematite roses.

Smoky quartz owes its distinctive color not to a dissolved metal but to natural gamma irradiation acting on trace aluminum atoms within the quartz structure over geological time — a striking example of how radiation can shape a mineral's appearance without altering its chemical formula.
