This attractive quartz specimen comes from the Schin Gorge (also known locally as Schinschlucht or Schynschlucht), a classic Alpine locality near Thusis in the Viamala region of Graubünden, Switzerland. The crystals are perfectly transparent and glassy, allowing the eye to travel straight through the quartz and rest on the striking green phantom traced within — a ghost-like outline left behind by an earlier stage of the crystal's growth.

The naturally grown crystals display well-formed prismatic faces and hexagonal cross-sections, clear evidence of a slow and undisturbed growth inside an Alpine fissure. The contrast between the water-clear host quartz and the mossy green chlorite is exceptionally sharp, giving the piece strong visual depth and a genuine three-dimensional ghost-within-a-crystal effect.

The Schin Gorge is well known among Alpine mineral collectors for producing quartz with chlorite phantoms of this kind, but collecting activity in the gorge (locally referred to as 'Strahlen') is now restricted, which means specimens like this one are becoming progressively harder to source on the market.

Measuring 71 x 36 x 35 mm and weighing 52 g, this piece is a fine addition to any mineralogical collection focused on Alpine quartz or phantom-included specimens, and its clean, well-formed crystal faces also make it an attractive display piece.

Quartz is a tectosilicate built from a continuous three-dimensional framework of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra, and in its pure form it is completely colorless and transparent, exactly as seen in the host crystal of this specimen. The vivid green phantom running through the crystal is not caused by any coloring element within the quartz itself, but by thin internal layers of chlorite, a phyllosilicate group mineral whose green color is caused by iron (Fe2+) and magnesium held within its sheet-like structure. During growth, a temporary pause in quartz formation allowed a film of chlorite to settle onto the crystal faces; quartz growth then resumed, sealing the older surface inside the new crystal and creating the ghost-like phantom now visible within it.

The well-formed prismatic faces and hexagonal outline of the crystals point to slow, undisturbed growth typical of Alpine fissures, where quartz crystallizes from silica-rich hydrothermal fluids circulating within fractures in the surrounding metamorphic rock. The Schin Gorge, near Thusis in the Viamala region of Graubünden, is a historically important locality for this type of chlorite-phantom quartz, though mineral collecting there is now restricted, limiting the availability of new material on the market.

Phantom crystals form when a growing quartz crystal is briefly coated with a thin layer of another mineral — in this case green chlorite — before quartz growth resumes and encases the older crystal faces inside a new, larger crystal, preserving a ghost-like outline of its earlier shape.

The Schin Gorge, cut by the Albula river near Thusis in the Viamala region of Graubünden, is one of the most celebrated Alpine sources of chlorite-included quartz, but mineral collecting in the gorge is now officially restricted, meaning no new material can legally be extracted from the site, which adds rarity value to specimens already in circulation.
