This is a truly exceptional Fluorite specimen of museum proportions, originating from the Tounfit Caïdat locality in the Boumia Cercle, Midelt Province, part of the Drâa-Tafilalet Region of Morocco — an area at the foot of the Jbel Ayachi massif, long celebrated among collectors for producing some of the finest deeply colored fluorite in the world. The mineralization here formed in calcite-filled hydrothermal veins associated with the Tamazeght igneous complex, where fluorine-rich fluids circulated through fractured limestone and cooled to deposit well-formed cubic fluorite crystals.

The specimen presents a large, dense formation of interlocking cubic crystals, their faces sharply defined and richly saturated in an intense, remarkably uniform violet-purple hue. Crystals from this locality are well known for displaying a modified cubic habit, where the primary cube faces are truncated at the corners by small octahedral and rhombic dodecahedral faces, giving the surface a subtly faceted, almost sculptural texture rather than a simple flat cube. This complex crystal architecture, combined with the imposing size of the piece — measuring roughly 300 x 230 x 160 mm and weighing over 8 kg — creates a genuinely scenographic effect, with the deep violet color appearing to glow when the specimen is placed under strong light.

Fully natural and untreated, this fluorite is a superb representative of the Tounfit/Boumia mining district, an area still regarded by mineral dealers and collectors as one of the most important sources of gem-quality violet fluorite from Morocco. Its combination of imposing size, intense saturated color and well-formed crystal faces make it an outstanding statement piece for advanced mineral collections as well as for high-end interior display.

Fluorite is calcium fluoride (CaF₂), a halide mineral that crystallizes in the isometric system, most commonly forming cubes, though octahedral and more complex combined forms are also typical of the species. This specimen displays the classic modified cubic habit documented for the Tounfit/Boumia district: the corners of the primary cube faces are truncated by smaller octahedral and rhombic dodecahedral faces, producing a richly faceted, almost sculptural crystal surface rather than a simple flat cube.

The intense violet-purple color seen in this piece is a hallmark of fluorite from this region of the Moroccan High Atlas. This deep coloration is generally attributed to natural irradiation: trace amounts of radioactive elements such as uranium and thorium, present in the surrounding host rock over geological time, bombard the fluorite lattice and displace fluoride ions, creating so-called color centers (electron vacancies and colloidal calcium aggregates) that absorb visible light and produce the characteristic violet-to-deep-purple body color. Trace substitution of rare earth elements such as yttrium within the calcium sites of the crystal structure can further contribute to and intensify this purple tone.

Fluorite as a species is commonly reactive under ultraviolet light, a property from which the very phenomenon of fluorescence takes its name; while this specific specimen has not been tested with a UV lamp, owners are encouraged to verify its fluorescent response, as this is a very common feature of fluorite from Moroccan localities.

The name "fluorite" comes from the Latin word "fluere," meaning "to flow," originally referring to its use as a flux in metal smelting to lower the melting point of ores. Even more notably, fluorite lent its name to the very phenomenon of fluorescence, first described in the 19th century after scientists observed certain fluorite crystals glowing under invisible light.

The Tounfit and Boumia area of Morocco's Midelt Province, close to the Jbel Ayachi massif, has been producing exceptional deep violet fluorite specimens since a notable find in the region in the mid-2000s, and pieces from this locality are today prized worldwide for their intense, almost electric purple coloration and sharp crystal formations.
