This striking vanadinite specimen comes from the legendary Mibladen mining district in the Upper Moulouya region of Morocco, one of the most celebrated sources of fine vanadinite crystals in the world. The piece is entirely composed of sharp, well-formed hexagonal crystals fused together across a single crystalline plate, radiating outward in a way that strongly evokes the petal of a flower — an unusual and visually captivating growth pattern that sets this specimen apart from more common Mibladen material.

The color is a deep, saturated blood red, remarkably intense and even across the crystal faces, giving the piece a striking elegance and a strong three-dimensional presence despite its compact size. Vanadinite from this locality typically forms as short hexagonal prisms with flat terminations, and here the crystals are tightly intergrown, creating a lustrous, almost sculptural surface texture that catches the light beautifully.

Mibladen has been mined for lead ores since the early twentieth century, and large-scale industrial operations at the site ceased in 1976. Since then, fine vanadinite specimens such as this one have continued to emerge only sporadically, recovered by local artisanal miners digging small shafts into the old workings and following barite veins in search of mineralized pockets. Vanadinite is a secondary lead chlorovanadate belonging to the apatite group, chemically related to pyromorphite and mimetite, with which it can form solid solution series. It typically forms in the oxidation zone of lead deposits under arid climatic conditions, precipitating from vanadium-bearing fluids circulating through fractured and brecciated host rock — exactly the geological setting found at Mibladen, where vanadinite developed alongside baryte and cerussite in a stratiform lead-barium ore body.

The intense red color of this specimen is caused directly by the vanadium (V⁵⁺) housed within the vanadate tetrahedra that form the mineral's essential chemical framework. This vanadium absorbs strongly in the blue and green portions of the visible spectrum, allowing red and orange wavelengths to dominate; because the vanadium is a structural component of the mineral itself rather than a trace impurity, vanadinite is described as idiochromatic and is always red to orange in tone, varying only in depth and saturation.

The Mibladen mining district, located between the High and Middle Atlas Mountains near Midelt, has produced some of the finest vanadinite specimens ever found, dominating international mineral markets since the 1970s and repeatedly setting new benchmarks for aesthetic and crystalline quality. Although the historic industrial mine closed in 1976, small-scale artisanal digging in the old workings continues to this day, occasionally yielding pockets of outstanding red crystals like this one.
