This vanadinite specimen from the legendary Mibladen mining district in Morocco is a true showpiece of natural crystallization. The hexagonal crystals are fused together on a single crystalline plate, radiating outward in a way that closely resembles the petal of a flower — a rare and visually striking growth pattern that sets this piece apart from more common Moroccan vanadinite clusters.

The color is an intense, deep blood-red, saturated and uniform across the crystal faces, giving the specimen exceptional contrast and visual impact. The crystal faces show the characteristic vitreous to sub-adamantine luster typical of fine vanadinite, catching the light along the hexagonal prism terminations and enhancing the three-dimensional depth of the piece.

Mibladen, located roughly 25 km northeast of Midelt between the High and Middle Atlas Mountains, is internationally recognized as the source of the finest vanadinite crystals in the world, having dominated the international collector market since the 1970s. The main industrial lead mine at Mibladen was closed in 1976, and today specimens are recovered only through artisanal hand-digging in small shafts across the old workings — a labor-intensive process that makes exceptional pieces like this one increasingly scarce on the market.

Vanadinite is a lead vanadate chloride belonging to the apatite group of minerals. Its intense red-to-orange coloration is not due to a trace impurity but is an intrinsic, idiochromatic property of the mineral itself: vanadium in its V5+ oxidation state sits within the vanadate (VO4) tetrahedra that form the core of the crystal structure, strongly absorbing the blue and green portions of the visible spectrum and allowing red and orange wavelengths to dominate. This is why vanadinite is essentially always found in shades of red, orange, or brown, with the depth of red in this specimen reflecting a particularly rich, well-crystallized example of the species.

The crystals form as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zones of lead ore deposits, typically in arid to semi-arid climates, where vanadium-bearing solutions react with weathering galena to precipitate the characteristic hexagonal prisms. In this specimen, individual crystals are intergrown on a single flattened plate, radiating outward in a pattern that gives the piece its distinctive petal-like appearance — a growth habit that reflects rapid, near-simultaneous nucleation of many crystals from a mineral-rich solution within a cavity.

The Mibladen deposit, hosted in Jurassic limestones and dolomites, has been worked since the early 20th century; its main industrial operations closed in 1976, and today collector-grade specimens are recovered exclusively through artisanal hand-mining of the old workings, a factor that continues to drive the rarity and desirability of fine pieces such as this one.

Vanadinite was first identified in 1801 by Spanish mineralogist Andrés Manuel del Rio while studying a brown lead ore from Zimapán, Mexico — though the new element it contained was only definitively confirmed decades later by Swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefström, who named it vanadium after Vanadis, the Norse goddess of beauty. Fittingly, vanadinite's vivid red crystals have made it one of the most visually admired minerals among collectors worldwide.

The Mibladen mining district, whose name is now synonymous with world-class vanadinite, has produced specimens since the early 20th century, with more than 600 individual shafts worked between 1926 and 1949 alone. The main industrial mine ceased operations in 1976, yet the deposit remains active today purely through small-scale artisanal digging — meaning every fine Mibladen specimen still on the market today, like this one, was extracted by hand.
