This vanadinite specimen is a genuine showpiece of the species: a compact group of gemmy, intensely blood-red hexagonal crystals has grown side by side on a single crystalline plate, radiating outward in a form that strongly recalls the petal of a flower. The saturation and uniformity of the red color across every crystal face give the piece exceptional visual impact, while the sharpness of the terminations and the tight, parallel packing of the prisms speak to an unusually harmonious growth event.

The specimen comes from Mibladen, in the Drâa-Tafilalet Region of Morocco, the locality regarded by collectors as the source of the finest vanadinite crystals in the world. Large-scale industrial lead mining at Mibladen ended in 1976, and the district's countless shafts are today explored only by local artisanal miners working with simple hand tools - a factor that has made outstanding, well-formed specimens like this one increasingly difficult to source.

Beyond its scientific interest, the combination of vivid color, sculptural crystal form and compact size makes this piece equally suited to a systematic mineral collection or to a refined display setting.

This vanadinite specimen displays the deep blood-red color that has made the species famous among collectors worldwide. The hue is idiochromatic, meaning the color-causing element is a structural part of the mineral itself rather than a trace impurity: vanadium in its V5+ oxidation state sits inside the vanadate (VO4) tetrahedra and strongly absorbs blue and green wavelengths of visible light, leaving red and orange tones dominant. Because vanadium is essential to the chemical formula rather than an accidental substitution, vanadinite from vanadium-rich deposits like Mibladen is reliably saturated in color.

Vanadinite is a secondary lead chlorovanadate belonging to the apatite supergroup, chemically related to pyromorphite and mimetite through substitution of the anion group. It crystallizes in the hexagonal system, typically as short hexagonal prisms; in this piece, numerous individual prisms have grown side by side on a single crystalline plate, radiating outward in a pattern that closely recalls the petal of a flower - a growth habit considerably less common than the simple isolated prisms usually seen from this locality.

The specimen comes from the historic Mibladen mining district in the Drâa-Tafilalet Region of Morocco, long regarded as the source of the world's finest vanadinite crystals. Large-scale industrial lead mining in the district ceased in 1976; since then the numerous shafts and workings have been worked only by local artisanal miners using simple hand tools, which has made exceptional pieces increasingly scarce on the international market.

  • Formula: Pb5(VO4)3Cl
  • Key chemical elements: Lead (Pb), Vanadium (V), Oxygen (O), Chlorine (Cl)
  • Hardness (Mohs scale): 2.5 - 3
  • Mineral class: Vanadates (Apatite Supergroup)
  • Crystal system: Hexagonal
  • Crystal habit: Hexagonal prisms fused into a radiating, petal-like crystalline plate
  • Formation: Secondary mineral formed in the oxidation zone of lead deposits in arid environments
  • Color: Intense blood-red, caused by V5+ within the vanadate structure
  • Locality status: Historic industrial mining ceased in 1976; now worked only by small-scale artisanal miners

Vanadinite owes its name to vanadium, an element first identified in a Mexican lead ore historically nicknamed 'plomo rojo' (red lead) long before its chemical nature was understood - vanadium was actually discovered twice, by two different scientists in two different minerals, roughly thirty years apart.

The Mibladen district, where this specimen was found, has been mined since the early twentieth century and produced most of its output between 1926 and 1949, when more than 600 separate shafts were sunk into the Jurassic limestone hills. Industrial operations were abandoned in 1976 once the deposit no longer yielded profitable ore, but the local Berber community has continued to work the old shafts by hand ever since, supplying the world's mineral market with vanadinite specimens that remain unmatched for color and crystal quality.

In crystal healing traditions, Vanadinite is associated with grounding energy, motivation and the completion of projects. It is said to help channel scattered energy into focused action, supporting creativity, self-discipline and physical vitality. Some practitioners also connect its fiery red color to the root and sacral chakras, believing it encourages courage and a strong connection to the physical body.

As with all crystal healing practices, these interpretations are not scientifically proven.
