This is a superb, fully natural combination specimen of Quartz, Azurite and Malachite from the copper-rich deposits of M'Ssici, near Alnif in Morocco's Drâa-Tafilalet Region — a locality often referred to among collectors simply as an azurite mine. The piece is anchored by a cluster of well-formed Quartz crystals whose distinct prismatic faces and glassy terminations are clearly visible, providing a bright, semi-transparent backdrop for the copper minerals growing across them.

Draped over and around the Quartz, intense deep-blue Azurite crystals intertwine harmoniously with vivid green Malachite, the two copper carbonates forming in close association as is typical for this locality — the relative abundance of one over the other largely governed by the amount of water present during their formation. The result is a spectacular, scenographic chromatic contrast between the cool blue and vibrant green tones, set against the pale host Quartz.

Measuring 117 x 110 x 72 mm and weighing 770 g, this is a sizeable, display-worthy piece with genuine mineralogical merit. This specimen combines three distinct mineral species: Quartz, a silicate, together with Azurite and Malachite, two closely related copper carbonate minerals. The Quartz forms the crystalline host, displaying well-developed prismatic crystals with clearly visible faces and terminations, typical of quartz grown in open cavities within copper-bearing host rock.

The striking colors of this piece have a clear chemical origin: both Azurite and Malachite owe their intense coloration to copper (Cu²⁺) ions incorporated directly into their crystal structure, acting as chromophores. Azurite's deep blue color and Malachite's vivid green both result from the same copper cation, with the specific hue determined by subtle differences in the coordination of copper within each mineral's distinct crystal lattice. The two minerals commonly form together in the oxidized (weathered) zones of copper deposits, and the relative proportion of water versus carbon dioxide available during formation determines whether azurite or malachite predominates — azurite forming under drier conditions and malachite favored by more hydrous environments. Malachite can also form as a secondary alteration product coating or replacing azurite over time, a process attributable to ongoing surface weathering.

The locality of M'Ssici (also recorded historically as Mecissi or M'Cissi), near Alnif in Morocco's Drâa-Tafilalet Region, is well known among mineral collectors and is sometimes referred to simply as "the azurite mine" due to the abundance and quality of azurite specimens it has produced.

Azurite and Malachite are chemically very closely related copper carbonates, and specimens combining both minerals are common precisely because they tend to crystallize together: subtle differences in water content and carbon dioxide availability during formation determine whether azurite or malachite predominates in a given pocket. Over long periods of exposure, azurite can also gradually alter to malachite on the surface of specimens, a natural weathering process that has been documented in many Moroccan copper mineral finds.

Both minerals have a long history of human use long before their appearance in mineral collections: azurite and malachite were ground and used as blue and green pigments in painting and decoration in numerous ancient cultures, and malachite in particular has been mined for copper and used ornamentally for thousands of years.
