This is a superb cluster of Fluorite crystals showing an intense, deep purple saturation from the celebrated Hexigten Banner locality (Huanggang Fe-Sn deposit) in Chifeng Prefecture, Inner Mongolia, China — one of the most productive and admired sources of gemmy octahedral fluorite to have emerged from China in recent decades. The crystals are dominated by the octahedron, a form for which this deposit is particularly renowned, with sharp edges, well-developed faces and clean terminations that let light travel through the material and ignite the violet color from within.

Under raking light the specimen reveals the crisp geometry of its crystal faces and the subtle growth textures typical of hydrothermal octahedral fluorite, where crystallization advanced in distinct stages leaving faint stepped or slightly modified faces along some edges — a detail collectors specifically look for as a sign of natural, undamaged growth rather than artificial shaping. The overall habit and the richness of the purple tone place this piece well above the average quality typically seen from this locality, where much of the material tends to be paler or less gemmy.

Fluorite from this area of Inner Mongolia is extracted from polymetallic tin-iron skarn and hydrothermal veins associated with magnetite, calcite, quartz and sulfide minerals, and specimens of this saturation and clarity represent only a small fraction of what the deposit has historically produced. This makes the piece a genuinely desirable addition for both aesthetic display and systematic mineral collections focused on fine Chinese fluorite.

Fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF₂) is the type member of the halide mineral class and one of the most popular collector species due to its wide range of vivid colors and its perfect cleavage. The intense purple coloration seen in this specimen is caused by the substitution of trace amounts of yttrium and other rare-earth elements (such as cerium) for calcium within the crystal lattice, combined with radiation-induced color centers (F-centers) formed by natural background radiation acting on the fluorite structure over geological time — a well-documented mechanism behind deep purple and violet fluorite worldwide.

Fluorite crystallizes in the isometric (cubic) system and most commonly forms as cubes, but the octahedron — as beautifully expressed in this specimen — is also a classic and highly prized habit for the species, particularly from Chinese hydrothermal deposits. Fluorite is well known for its association with the discovery of fluorescence, and while not confirmed on this individual piece, fluorite from many Chinese localities is commonly UV-reactive; testing under a UV lamp is recommended to verify this specimen's response.

The name Fluorite comes from the Latin "fluere," meaning "to flow," a reference to its historical use as a flux in metal smelting to lower the melting point of ores.
