This fine specimen combines two of the most sought-after supergene copper-cobalt minerals from the Katanga Copperbelt: chrysocolla and heterogenite, collected together from the historic Star Mine (also known as L'Etoile du Congo Mine or Kalukuluku Mine) near Lubumbashi, in the Haut-Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The piece is entirely natural, with no artificial treatment or enhancement.

The chrysocolla forms smooth, intensely azure-blue botryoidal and mammillary crusts, their rounded, softly lustrous surfaces catching the light and giving the piece a glassy, almost translucent quality where the crust is thinnest. In sharp contrast, the heterogenite develops as dense, glossy, midnight-blue to near-black botryoidal masses, their metallic-looking surfaces creating a deep visual counterpoint to the paler copper mineral beside them. The interplay between the two textures and tones produces a well-balanced composition with genuine depth and a strong three-dimensional presence.

The Star Mine is one of the most historically important cobalt-copper localities in the Democratic Republic of Congo: it was the very first mine in the country to produce cobalt ore, back in 1907, and it is also the type locality of the rare copper phosphate cornetite. Large-scale industrial extraction at the site has long since ceased, and today the deposit is worked mainly on a small, artisanal scale by local diggers searching for specimens and residual ore, which makes well-formed, aesthetically pleasing combination pieces like this one increasingly difficult to find on the market.

With its rich color contrast, good structural development and interesting mineralogical association, this specimen is well suited both to a serious systematic mineral collection and to display in a refined interior setting.

This specimen brings together two distinct mineral species formed by the same supergene weathering process. Chrysocolla is a hydrous copper silicate that typically occurs as botryoidal, mammillary or crusty aggregates in the oxidized zones of copper deposits; its intense azure-blue color is caused by the copper ion Cu²⁺ acting as a chromophore within its structure, the same element responsible for the blue-green tones seen in malachite and azurite's copper-bearing relatives. Heterogenite is a cobalt oxyhydroxide with a delafossite-type crystal structure; its dark, midnight-blue to black color and metallic-looking luster are due to trivalent cobalt (Co³⁺) within that structure. Both minerals formed through the oxidation and weathering of primary copper-cobalt sulfide ores in the so-called "cobalt cap" of the Katanga Copperbelt during the Mio-Pliocene period, as descending groundwater altered the original sulfides into these secondary oxide and silicate phases. The Star Mine, where this specimen originates, is a historically significant locality that was the first source of cobalt ore extracted in the Democratic Republic of Congo and today is mainly worked by artisanal diggers rather than industrial operations.

The Star Mine near Lubumbashi, also known by its original name L'Etoile du Congo (or Kalukuluku), holds a special place in Congolese mining history: it was the first mine in the entire country to produce cobalt ore, starting in 1907. It is also the type locality where the rare copper phosphate mineral cornetite was first discovered and described, named after the Belgian geologist Jules Cornet, who documented the extraordinary mineral wealth of the Katanga region. Heterogenite itself takes its name from the Greek for "of another kind," a nod to how its composition sets it apart from similar-looking cobalt and manganese oxide minerals. Roughly 70% of the world's known heterogenite comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, making the Katanga Copperbelt the reference locality for this species worldwide. Today, large-scale industrial mining at the Star Mine has largely wound down, and the site is mainly worked by local artisanal diggers, adding an extra layer of rarity to well-formed combination specimens like this one.
