This natural specimen pairs two classic secondary minerals of the Katanga Copperbelt: intensely colored azure-blue Chrysocolla and dark, blue-black Heterogenite. The two species developed side by side as smooth, rounded botryoidal crusts, their glossy, almost glass-like surfaces catching the light and emphasizing the rounded, grape-like texture typical of both minerals when they form in open cavities within the oxidized zone of copper-cobalt ore bodies.

The contrast between the bright, saturated blue of the Chrysocolla and the deep, near-black tone of the Heterogenite gives the piece remarkable visual depth, with the boundary between the two species forming an organic, flowing pattern across the specimen. This kind of well-balanced color contrast, combined with good surface luster on both minerals, is what collectors specifically look for in combination specimens from this locality.

The specimen comes from the Star of the Congo Mine (historically known as L'Etoile du Congo Mine, originally the Kalukuluku Mine), near Lubumbashi in the Haut-Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of Congo — one of the classic cobalt-copper localities of the region. This mine is no longer active today, having been worked out and abandoned, which means fresh combination material of this type is no longer being produced and existing specimens are becoming increasingly difficult to source.

Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper silicate whose intense azure-blue to blue-green color comes directly from copper (Cu²⁺) ions within its structure, acting as the chromophore responsible for its saturated hue. It typically forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zone of copper deposits, precipitating from copper-rich solutions as botryoidal, encrusting, or massive aggregates rather than well-formed crystals, since it is usually cryptocrystalline to amorphous.

Heterogenite is a cobalt oxyhydroxide and, together with the related mineral asbolane, is the dominant supergene cobalt ore mineral of the Katanga Copperbelt. Its deep blue-black to black color is caused by trivalent cobalt (Co³⁺) in its structure; recent spectroscopic studies suggest heterogenite actually adopts a delafossite-type structure rather than a simple hydroxide arrangement. Like Chrysocolla, it forms almost exclusively as smooth, lustrous botryoidal or mammillary crusts rather than discrete crystals, a habit that reflects its origin through rapid precipitation in near-surface, oxidizing conditions. Both minerals in this specimen formed together during the same weathering event, as descending oxygen-rich waters altered primary copper-cobalt sulfide ores (such as carrollite) into this colorful secondary mineral assemblage — a process believed to have taken place during the Pliocene in this part of the Central African Copperbelt.

Chrysocolla has been used since antiquity, with its name derived from the Greek words for "gold" and "glue," referencing its historical use by ancient goldsmiths as a soldering flux. Heterogenite, on the other hand, is a much more industrially significant mineral: it is the most abundant oxidized cobalt-bearing mineral in the Katanga Copperbelt, a region that supplies a large share of the world's cobalt, a metal now critical for battery technology. The Star of the Congo Mine, where this specimen originates, has long been famous among collectors for producing fine combination pieces of Chrysocolla and Heterogenite, but the mine has since been abandoned, making well-formed aesthetic specimens from this exact locality progressively rarer on the market.
