This impressive specimen is a dense, interlocking cluster of Calcite crystals displaying a striking combination of yellow, orange and white coloration across a single piece. The crystals are well individualized and show glossy, well-developed faces with sharp pseudo-hexagonal prismatic terminations, a form typical of fine Chinese calcite material, where alternating rhombohedral and prism faces give the crystals their characteristic hexagonal-looking outline.

The overall composition is a tight, three-dimensional intergrowth rather than a single isolated crystal, giving the piece a strong sculptural presence and an aesthetic impact that is unusual for calcite specimens of this size. The color zoning across the cluster, from pale white cores to warm orange and golden-yellow crystal tips, adds visual depth and contrast that photographs particularly well under strong, even lighting.

The specimen comes from Chenzhou Prefecture in Hunan Province, a part of southern China long recognized among mineral collectors for producing some of the finest calcite specimens on the world market, thanks to the region's Sn-polymetallic skarn and hydrothermal vein systems. According to the seller, this particular material represents a fairly recent and still relatively little-known find, which adds to its appeal for collectors looking for fresh Chinese calcite outside the more commonly seen classic finds from this province.

Calcite is the most common and widespread polymorph of calcium carbonate, crystallizing in the trigonal system. In well-formed specimens like this one, the combination of rhombohedral and prism faces produces the pseudo-hexagonal prismatic outline that collectors often describe simply as 'hexagonal' crystals, even though the true crystal system is trigonal rather than hexagonal.

The warm yellow-to-orange coloration seen in this cluster is caused by trace amounts of iron and manganese incorporated within the calcite crystal lattice, substituting in small proportions for calcium; higher local concentrations of iron-bearing impurities, sometimes together with microscopic inclusions of iron oxides, tend to push the color from pale yellow toward deeper orange tones, while the whiter portions of the cluster reflect zones with lower trace-element content. This kind of trace-element zoning is common in calcite from mineral-rich hydrothermal systems such as those found in the Chenzhou area of Hunan, where calcite typically forms as a late-stage gangue mineral associated with Sn-polymetallic skarn and vein mineralization.
