Wulfenite is a lead molybdate mineral with the formula PbMoO4, forming as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zones of lead and lead-zinc deposits, where oxygen-rich groundwater mobilizes lead and molybdenum released from the weathering of primary sulfides such as galena. It crystallizes in the tetragonal system, most commonly as thin, square, beveled tabular plates, exactly the habit seen in this specimen, and its high refractive index gives the crystals their notable adamantine to resinous luster.

The bright yellow color of this specimen is attributed to the intrinsic optical behavior of the molybdate (MoO4) group within the crystal structure itself, related to charge-transfer transitions between molybdenum and oxygen; this places the piece closer to wulfenite's least chemically modified, molybdenum-dominant form. In many other wulfenite occurrences worldwide, the color shifts toward orange or red when trace chromium substitutes into the structure, so a clean yellow specimen like this one reflects a composition close to the pure lead molybdate end-member.

Because the deposit is now largely worked out, well-crystallized specimens like this one are increasingly considered representative of a closed chapter in Moroccan mineral collecting history.
