This specimen showcases lustrous, intensely green Dioptase crystals set against a striking blue background of Plancheite and Shattuckite, two closely related copper silicates that are frequently found intergrown with one another due to their nearly identical crystal chemistry. The Dioptase forms small trigonal, rhombohedral crystals with a vitreous to sub-adamantine luster, their saturated emerald-green color standing in bold contrast to the fibrous, acicular sprays of blue Plancheite and Shattuckite that coat portions of the matrix.

The piece comes from the legendary Tsumeb Mine in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia, one of the most celebrated mineral localities on Earth for the sheer diversity and aesthetic quality of its copper, lead and zinc secondary minerals. The mine operated from 1907 until it closed permanently in 1996 for economic reasons; a brief attempt to revive specimen-oriented extraction in the following decade was ultimately abandoned by 2008, meaning material of this kind is no longer being produced and existing pieces are becoming increasingly difficult to find on the market.

The overall balance of the specimen, with well-formed Dioptase crystals of good size set against the softer blue tones of the associated silicates, gives it strong visual impact and makes it a fitting addition to any systematic or aesthetic mineral collection.

Dioptase is a copper cyclosilicate with the formula Cu6Si6O18·6H2O, crystallizing in the trigonal system as small rhombohedral to prismatic crystals with a vitreous, sometimes sub-adamantine luster. Its intense emerald to bluish-green color is caused by Cu2+ ions occupying Jahn-Teller distorted octahedral sites within the silicate ring structure, producing a broad optical absorption band centered around 752 nanometers that leaves the green portion of the visible spectrum dominant to the eye.

Shattuckite (Cu5(SiO3)4(OH)2) and Plancheite (Cu8Si8O22(OH)4·H2O) are closely related copper inosilicates, so similar in structure and appearance that they are frequently intergrown and difficult to distinguish without testing. Both form as fibrous, acicular crystals arranged in radiating or spherulitic sprays, and both owe their blue to blue-green coloration to the same copper chromophore responsible for the color of other secondary copper minerals such as azurite and malachite. All three minerals formed together in the oxidized zone of the Tsumeb copper-lead-zinc deposit, precipitating from copper-rich fluids circulating through the dolomite host rock.

The Tsumeb Mine was first identified in 1893 by prospector Matthew Rogers at what became known as the 'green hill', though the copper-rich outcrop had already been worked by local Bushmen long before European discovery. Commercial operations began in 1907, and over the following decades Tsumeb became one of the most prolific sources of rare and unusual minerals in the world, with well over one hundred distinct species recorded from its workings.

The mine's deep, oxidized copper-lead-zinc ore body created the ideal chemical environment for the formation of vividly colored secondary minerals such as Dioptase, Shattuckite and Plancheite, all of which owe their striking colors to copper. Because the mine has been closed since 1996 and specimen-focused mining efforts ended by 2008, pieces from Tsumeb are considered historic material, adding an extra layer of significance to every specimen that leaves the deposit.

In crystal healing traditions, Dioptase is regarded as a stone of the heart, believed to encourage emotional release, forgiveness and a renewed sense of abundance and prosperity. Its intense green color is often associated with growth, regeneration and connection to the heart chakra.

Shattuckite and Plancheite, with their deep blue tones, are traditionally linked to the throat and third eye chakras and are said to support clear communication, intuition and spiritual insight, particularly when used alongside Dioptase to balance heart-centered and mind-centered energies.
