This aesthetic Amethyst specimen comes from the historic mining area of Piedra Parada, in the Tatatila Municipality of Veracruz, Mexico — one of the most celebrated amethyst localities in the world, though frequently and incorrectly labeled with the name of the nearby town of Las Vigas.
The specimen displays a harmonious cluster of intensely violet, well-formed crystals rising from the natural matrix, creating a striking contrast between the deep purple crystallization and the host rock. At Piedra Parada, amethyst does not form as typical geode linings, but as elongated prismatic crystals growing within gas cavities, clefts and veins hosted in a dark andesitic volcanic rock — a distinctive growth style that sets Mexican amethyst apart from Brazilian or Uruguayan material.
Piedra Parada has been mined since the 1960s, when it first gained international fame among collectors. Since the late 1990s, the easily accessible surface deposits have become progressively depleted, and today the locality is worked only on a small scale, making well-crystallized, richly colored specimens increasingly sought after among mineral collectors worldwide.

Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO2), one of the most abundant minerals in the Earth's crust. Its intense violet color is not due to a major structural element, but to trace amounts of iron: ferric iron (Fe3+) ions substitute for silicon within the quartz lattice, and natural gamma irradiation over geological time frees an electron from these iron centers, generating a [FeO4]0 color center that is directly responsible for the violet hue. The more intense and prolonged the natural irradiation, the deeper the purple coloration produced.
At the Piedra Parada locality, amethyst does not occur as classic geode linings but as elongated, well-terminated prismatic crystals growing within gas cavities, clefts and veins hosted in andesite, a silica-poor volcanic rock. This unusual host environment, combined with a long mining history dating back to the 1960s and a marked decline in easily accessible surface material since the late 1990s, makes fine Piedra Parada specimens increasingly valued among collectors.

Piedra Parada is often called Las Vigas Amethyst in the mineral trade, but that name actually refers to a nearby town rather than the true mining area — the correct locality name is Piedra Parada, Tatatila Municipality, Veracruz. The deposit rose to international fame in the 1960s after collector Alfonso Ontiveras began purchasing and distributing specimens found by local villagers, launching Veracruz amethyst onto the world market. Unlike most amethyst geodes, which line hollow cavities in basalt, the crystals from Piedra Parada grow as elongated prisms directly within veins and clefts in andesite rock, giving them their distinctive slender, well-terminated shapes.
