This is an imposing, museum-caliber specimen built around a dense cactus-style aggregate of natural citrine quartz, the kind of piece recommended for institutions building or expanding a mineralogical museum collection rather than a standard private display. At first glance the mass of crystals reads as a dark smoky quartz, but when backlit the true nature of the piece is revealed: a strong yellow to yellow-green hue that identifies it as genuine natural citrine, a form far rarer on the market than the heat-treated amethyst commonly sold under the same name.

More than 300 individual crystals cover the specimen, virtually free of damage or breakage according to the seller's own assessment, with the largest single crystal reaching an impressive 5.2 cm, a remarkable size for this particular type of quartz formation. The crystals rise directly from and are partially draped by a flow of pink dolomite, creating a vivid visual contrast between the dark, smoky-toned quartz terminations and the pale rose carbonate crust beneath them. This combination of dolomite-coated matrix with radiating quartz crystal points is typical of the classic Cavnic-district mineralization, prized by collectors for its aesthetic contrast as much as for its mineralogy.

The Cavnic mining district, active since the 14th century and intensively worked through the 20th century, ceased large-scale operations in the mid-2000s and has since flooded, making fresh specimens from this locality increasingly difficult to source. At over 34 cm across and weighing more than 16 kg, this specimen sits comfortably in the museum-size category, equally suited to a high-level mineral collection, an institutional display, or a striking piece of natural interior décor.

The dominant species in this specimen is quartz (SiO₂), here in its citrine variety, distinguished from ordinary yellow quartz by the origin of its color: rather than surface staining or mineral inclusions, the yellow-green tone is caused by aluminum-based color centers formed within the crystal lattice through natural irradiation over geological time, a mechanism closely related to the one that produces smoky quartz. This is why the same crystal can show smoky brown tones in reflected light and a warmer citrine hue when light passes through it, and why some researchers also point to trace iron as a contributing factor in certain citrine occurrences — the precise cause of citrine's color remains a topic of ongoing debate among mineralogists.

The crystals grew as a dense radiating aggregate, commonly referred to in the trade as "cactus quartz," in which numerous small prismatic individuals nucleate and grow outward from a shared base or matrix, giving the cluster its characteristic spiny, crowded appearance. This growth habit typically forms in low-temperature hydrothermal cavities where silica-rich fluids crystallized slowly over an extended period. The associated pink dolomite, CaMg(CO₃)₂, owes its rose coloration to small amounts of manganese substituting for magnesium and calcium within its carbonate structure, a common cause of color in so-called "pink" or manganoan dolomite. The Cavnic district's polymetallic veins, historically worked for lead, zinc, and other base metals, provided the mineralizing environment in which both the quartz and the dolomite crystallized together.

The mining town of Cavnic, in Romania's Maramureș County, has a documented mining history stretching back to 1336, making it one of the oldest continuously worked mineral districts in Europe. Intensive extraction during the 20th century brought numerous world-class specimens to the market, but operations wound down and the workings flooded in the mid-2000s, meaning locality pieces of this size and quality are effectively finite and will become progressively harder to find.
