This remarkable specimen comes from a rarely documented and little-known excavation site on Elba Island, distinct from the far more famous Rio Marina and Valle Giove workings that most collectors associate with Elban pyrite. While Elba pyrite is typically found embedded in hematite or in association with other pyrite masses, this piece stands apart: hundreds of individual crystals are hosted in an unusually clay-like, partly friable matrix, a texture rarely seen in specimens from the island's historic iron district.

The crystals display the classic pentagonal dodecahedron habit (pyritohedron) for which Elban pyrite is celebrated worldwide, with sharp, well-defined faces catching the light across the entire surface of the matrix. With patience, portions of the surrounding clay matrix can be carefully worked away by hand to reveal further crystals still concealed beneath, offering the possibility of ongoing discovery within the same piece.

A further distinctive feature is the surface condition of the crystals: a natural coating of iron oxides has developed over time, producing a shifting iridescence across various golden, bronze and rainbow-like tones. Where this coating is removed, the underlying pyrite reveals a bright, lustrous silvery-metallic surface, creating a fascinating contrast within the same specimen.

Elba's historic iron and sulfide mining district, active since Etruscan and Roman times, was definitively closed in 1981, and the specific working from which this piece was extracted is itself little documented, adding to its rarity and historical significance. Pieces of this scale, crystal density and matrix type are considered exceptionally uncommon, with only a small number of comparable specimens known among collectors and museums.

Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral with the formula FeS₂, and it is the most common sulfide mineral in the Earth's crust. Its distinctive brass-yellow, metallic color is caused by the electronic structure of the Fe–S bonding within the crystal lattice, where the arrangement of iron and sulfur ions absorbs and reflects light in a way that produces its characteristic golden metallic sheen. On this specimen, an additional surface iridescence is visible, caused by a thin secondary coating of iron oxides and hydroxides that formed through natural surface alteration; this thin film produces optical interference effects, generating the shifting rainbow-like colors observed across the crystal faces, a phenomenon also well documented on iridescent hematite from the same Elba mining district.

Crystallographically, pyrite belongs to the isometric (cubic) system, but crystallizes in the diploidal crystal class, which lacks the full symmetry of the holohedral cubic class. This lower symmetry is precisely why pyrite so often develops the pentagonal dodecahedron, or pyritohedron, habit seen on this specimen, rather than simple cubes or octahedra — each face is a five-sided (not square) form, a hallmark of Elban pyrite specifically. The mineralization is linked to the broader hydrothermal and skarn-related iron ore deposits of eastern Elba, generated in association with Miocene-age granitic intrusions that drove mineral-rich fluids into the surrounding host rocks, precipitating hematite and pyrite in the process.
