Autunite is a hydrated calcium uranyl phosphate mineral with the chemical formula Ca(UO₂)₂(PO₄)₂·10–12H₂O. It belongs to the phosphate class and to the Autunite group, a family of secondary uranium minerals formed in oxidizing conditions. This mineral forms in the supergene alteration zones of uranium deposits, where uranium is mobilized by oxygen-rich waters and recombines with phosphate and calcium. It typically develops thin tabular crystals with a platy habit due to its tetragonal crystal system. Its high water content makes Autunite structurally delicate and potentially unstable over time, as dehydration can alter its physical appearance. The uranium content is responsible for both its radioactive properties and its strong UV fluorescence.
