Amethyst is a violet variety of Quartz (SiO₂) belonging to the tectosilicate group and crystallizing in the trigonal crystal system. Its characteristic color is not caused only by iron content, but mainly by the presence of structural defects known as color centers.

Color centers are lattice imperfections in the quartz crystal structure created by the interaction between trace amounts of iron (Fe³⁺ substituting silicon sites) and natural background radiation from surrounding rocks containing radioactive elements such as uranium, thorium, and potassium-40. This natural irradiation displaces electrons within the crystal lattice, producing stable electronic traps that selectively absorb parts of the visible light spectrum, resulting in the purple coloration typical of amethyst.

When exposed to heat, these color centers are destroyed as the trapped electrons return to a stable state. This structural change can eliminate the violet color and produce yellow to orange hues, depending on the oxidation state and coordination of iron within the crystal structure.
