Almandine is an iron-aluminum silicate belonging to the garnet group, part of the almandine-pyrope and almandine-spessartine solid solution series. Its intense blood-red to brownish-red color is caused by the presence of ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) occupying the divalent cation site within the nesosilicate structure, acting as the primary chromophore; minor manganese substitution can shift the tone toward a more purplish-red hue, as is common in garnets from Alpine pegmatite environments such as the Codera Valley.

Crystallizing in the isometric system, almandine typically develops rounded dodecahedral and trapezohedral faces, sometimes combined into complex, well-rounded forms. In this specimen, two individual crystals are joined in contact growth, a twinned arrangement that is relatively uncommon for garnet given its high cubic symmetry and adds particular structural interest to the piece. Almandine is the most common member of the garnet group and typically forms in mica schists, gneisses and pegmatites produced by regional metamorphism, often occurring alongside minerals such as quartz, mica, tourmaline and beryl in alpine pegmatite systems like those of the Codera and Bodengo valleys.
