This natural Labradorite specimen comes from the anorthosite bodies of the Ampanihy District, in the Atsimo-Andrefana Region of southwestern Madagascar, one of the world's most important sources of gem-quality labradorite. The quarries in this area, including those operated near the communes of Fotadrevo and Maniry by companies such as Malagasy Minerals Limited and Norcross Exploration & Exploitation, remain active today, extracting labradorite directly from large anorthosite intrusions.

The surface of this piece reveals the mineral's most celebrated feature: a vivid, shifting play of color known as labradorescence, moving through tones of deep blue, emerald green and warm gold as the specimen is rotated under light. This chatoyant effect is entirely natural and is what distinguishes labradorite from ordinary feldspar, giving the piece an almost metallic, iridescent quality that is especially striking on broken or partially polished faces.

The specimen is fully natural and untreated, presenting a compact, solid mass typical of massive labradorite material rather than individual terminated crystals, since this feldspar rarely forms well-developed crystal faces in nature. Its size and weight make it a satisfying, tactile piece for handling and close observation, ideal for collectors who appreciate both the scientific interest and the aesthetic beauty of feldspar-group minerals.
