Ilvaite is an iron-calcium sorosilicate mineral, CaFe³⁺Fe²⁺₂(Si₂O₇)O(OH), typically forming in skarn deposits — rock formed where igneous intrusions interact with carbonate-rich rocks such as limestone — often alongside magnetite, quartz and other calc-silicate minerals.

The crystal system is orthorhombic, and ilvaite typically develops elongated, prismatic crystals with distinctive vertical striations along their faces, as visible on this specimen. Its deep black color and glossy, near-metallic luster come from its high iron content, which also gives the mineral weak magnetic properties.

Ilvaite takes its name from "Ilva," the ancient Latin name for Elba Island in Italy, where the mineral was first described. While Elba remains historically important, the Huanggang deposit in Inner Mongolia — only significantly explored since around 2009 — has since produced some of the finest, most lustrous ilvaite crystals ever found, redefining what collectors expect from the species.

The naturally crossed arrangement of two crystals, as seen in this specimen, forms when two individual crystals nucleate close together and grow across one another over time — a striking but entirely natural outcome of the mineral's crystallization process.
