A strikingly aesthetic pseudomorph specimen from the legendary Payún Matrú volcano: brilliant, silvery-grey octahedral crystals of Martite (a Hematite pseudomorph after Magnetite) display sharp, well-defined faces combined with dramatic skeletal growth and open 'windows' typical of this rare Argentine locality. The lustrous metallic sheen and sculptural geometry make this a sought-after piece for serious systematic and aesthetic collections alike.

This is a superb example of Martite, the collector's term for Hematite that has completely pseudomorphed the original octahedral crystals of Magnetite, preserving their sharp geometric form while converting the chemistry entirely to iron oxide. The specimen shows the brilliant, metallic silvery-grey luster that makes this material so prized, with well-formed octahedral faces that catch the light beautifully from multiple angles.

What sets this piece apart is the presence of both dramatic skeletal growth and open 'windows' across the crystal faces - features that occur when the original Magnetite crystals grew rapidly along their edges and corners, leaving hollow, translucent-edged gaps where solid growth never fully closed in. This skeletal, hopper-like architecture gives the specimen a striking three-dimensional, almost sculptural quality that is highly valued among pseudomorph collectors.

The specimen comes from the Payún Matrú volcano, a remote high-altitude volcanic plateau in the Malargüe Department of Mendoza Province, southern Argentina, at the edge of Patagonia. This locality lies within a protected natural park area and sits at an elevation of well over 3,600 meters. Specimens of this type have only trickled out sporadically since the early 2000s, formed by the oxidative action of volcanic fumarole gases on pre-existing Magnetite crystals - making well-formed, sharp examples like this one genuinely difficult to source.

Every facet of the crystallization can be appreciated: the perfectly defined octahedral faces, the interplay of light across the metallic surface, and the intricate skeletal patterning that testifies to the unusual geological conditions required for this kind of pseudomorphosis. It is a piece that rewards close inspection and stands out as both a scientifically interesting specimen and a visually elegant display piece.
