GYPSUM "SWORD" – Giant Natural Swallow-Tail Crystal (54.5 cm), Italy

Outstanding natural Gypsum "Sword" crystal from the historic Fiorini Quarry, San Lazzaro di Savena, Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. This remarkable specimen consists of a single, completely natural crystal measuring more than 54 cm in length, making it an exceptional collector's piece. It exhibits the classic swallow-tail crystal habit that characterizes the finest gypsum crystals, together with excellent transparency, outstanding vitreous luster and a beautiful golden-yellow coloration. Internal crystallization patterns create fascinating geometric structures visible within the crystal, further enhancing its aesthetic appeal. Collected during the 1960s, this historic specimen combines rarity, unusual provenance and significant historical interest, making it ideal for museum-quality mineral collections and prestigious interior displays.

Gypsum is a hydrated calcium sulfate mineral with the chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O. It belongs to the sulfate mineral class and crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system. Gypsum commonly forms through the evaporation of sulfate-rich waters and can also develop in hydrothermal and sedimentary environments. The characteristic swallow-tail habit is produced by repeated twinning during crystal growth and is considered one of the most recognizable crystal forms of gypsum. Transparent golden crystals such as this specimen are particularly prized by collectors due to their rarity, crystal quality and exceptional aesthetic appearance.

• Chemical formula: CaSO₄·2H₂O
• Mineral class: Sulfates
• Crystal system: Monoclinic
• Formation: Evaporitic sedimentary deposits and hydrothermal environments
• Key elements: Calcium (Ca), Sulfur (S), Oxygen (O), Hydrogen (H)
• Crystal habit: Swallow-tail twin, elongated blade, sword-shaped crystal
• Color: Golden yellow, honey yellow, transparent

The famous "swallow-tail" habit of gypsum is produced by contact twinning, where two crystals grow together at a characteristic angle resembling the open wings of a swallow. Large transparent crystals with this habit are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Gypsum is traditionally regarded as a stone of purification, clarity and inner peace in crystal healing traditions. It is believed to support mental clarity, encourage calm reflection and help release emotional tension, making it a popular choice for meditation and quiet introspection. Many practitioners also associate gypsum with cleansing stagnant energy from a space, promoting a fresh and harmonious atmosphere.

This exceptional specimen from San Lazzaro di Savena displays a warm golden-yellow hue, which is said to bring optimism, confidence and gentle emotional renewal. Its luminous, transparent quality is thought to enhance focus and spiritual awareness, while the dramatic swallow-tail form is valued as a symbol of balance and natural order.
