The specimen shows a well-developed carpet of golden marcasite crystals spread across white calcite, creating an evocative "snow-capped mountain" effect — small, sparkling golden crystals blanketing the pale calcite beneath. Marcasite is an iron sulfide (FeS₂), chemically identical to pyrite but crystallizing in the orthorhombic system rather than pyrite's isometric system — a case of polymorphism, where two minerals share the same chemistry but differ in crystal structure due to the temperature and conditions of formation. Marcasite typically forms at lower temperatures in near-surface hydrothermal or sedimentary environments, often developing as tabular or radiating crystal crusts, as seen coating the calcite in this specimen.

Calcite (CaCO₃) is a carbonate mineral that commonly co-crystallizes with sulfides like marcasite in hydrothermal veins such as the Silius system. The red fluorescence documented in calcite from this locality under ultraviolet light is caused by trace manganese (Mn²⁺) acting as an activator within the crystal lattice — when exposed to UV energy, these manganese ions absorb and re-emit light in the red portion of the visible spectrum.

Marcasite and pyrite share the same chemical formula (FeS₂) but have different crystal structures — marcasite is often more prone to a golden, sometimes greenish-gold tarnish and tends to form in lower-temperature environments than pyrite, frequently as a crust of tiny crystals like the one covering this specimen.

The Silius vein system, comprising the Genna Tres Montis, Muscadroxiu, Pozzo Centrale and Acqua Frida shafts, is one of the most studied fluorite-bearing veins in Sardinia, and its calcite is specifically documented among mineralogists for glowing red under ultraviolet light.
