This is an exceptional Sapphire specimen, a gem-quality variety of Corundum, displaying a deep, intense violet color that sets it apart from the more common blue material typically associated with this mineral. The crystal shows the classic bipyramidal, barrel-like habit often seen in corundum from this deposit, with well-developed faces contributing to a lustrous, almost gem-like brilliance across its surface.

The violet crystal sits in striking contrast against a dark host matrix, composed of the mica-rich schist typical of the Amboarohy deposit near Zazafotsy. Sapphire is the gem-quality, non-red variety of the mineral Corundum, an aluminum oxide that is completely colorless in its pure form. The vivid violet color seen in this specimen is not incidental: it results from a combination of trace chromophore elements incorporated into the crystal lattice during formation. Chromium (Cr³⁺) substituting for aluminum introduces a pink-to-red component to the color, while iron and titanium, acting together through an intervalence charge-transfer mechanism, contribute the blue component typical of sapphire. When these chromophores occur together in the right proportions, the result is the intense violet hue displayed by this crystal, a color considered a genuine rarity among corundum specimens.
