The specimen comes from the Morro Velho Mine complex in Nova Lima, Minas Gerais - one of the most storied mining districts in Brazil and, historically, the world's oldest continuously worked gold mine, with operations dating back to 1725. The classic siderite material this locality is best known among collectors for was chiefly recovered from the older Mina Velha and Mina Grande underground workings, both of which have long since been closed and worked out, the deeper Mina Grande abandoned in the late 1990s and Mina Velha shutting down in the early 2000s. Fine siderite combination pieces of this kind are therefore tied to a historic, no-longer-productive occurrence, adding a genuine layer of scarcity and collectible interest.

Magnesite (magnesium carbonate), by contrast, is typically colorless to white because it lacks transition-metal chromophores in its pure form; its bright, brilliant appearance here comes instead from the clarity of its crystal faces and its strong vitreous luster, which creates a lively visual contrast against the darker Siderite.
Both minerals belong to the calcite group of carbonates and share a trigonal crystal system, though they typically develop different habits: Siderite from this locality is classically found as disc-shaped, tabular to lenticular crystals, while the accompanying Magnesite tends to form smaller, brighter rhombohedral-influenced crystals. Both species formed through hydrothermal and metamorphic carbonate-bearing solutions within the ancient greenstone-hosted rocks of the Morro Velho gold deposit, a geological setting shaped by regional metamorphism and mineral-rich hydrothermal fluids over hundreds of millions of years.

Under British management from 1834, its main shaft became, for a time, one of the deepest mine workings in the Americas, reaching depths of well over 2,000 meters.
While best known for gold, silver and arsenic minerals, Morro Velho also produced a very distinctive secondary mineral suite, with its disc-shaped, honey-to-golden-brown Siderite crystals - most abundantly collected during the 1970s and 80s - becoming a benchmark reference specimen for the species among mineral collectors worldwide.
The historic underground workings that yielded this classic material, Mina Velha and Mina Grande, have both long been closed and exhausted, making well-formed combination specimens like this one an increasingly scarce reminder of a legendary Brazilian locality.
