The deposit is a quartz vein-type tungsten-tin-beryllium system, hosted within schists and marble, which also produces fine Beryl, Cassiterite, and Muscovite. Scheelite is a calcium tungstate mineral, CaWO₄, and one of the two principal ore minerals of tungsten, a metal valued industrially for its extreme hardness, high melting point, and resistance to wear. This particular specimen originates from the Xuebaoding deposit, located about 14.5 km northwest of Huya Town in Pingwu County, Sichuan Province, a hydrothermal quartz vein-type tungsten-tin-beryllium system hosted within intercalated schists and marble.

The distinctive honey-orange color of Xuebaoding Scheelite is not caused by a simple major chromophore in the crystal structure, but is instead linked to the presence and abundance of trace rare earth elements (REEs) incorporated into the tungstate lattice during crystal growth, which is what gives this locality's material its uniquely warm, saturated tones compared to Scheelite from other deposits. The crystal displays the pseudo-octahedral habit typical of fine Xuebaoding material, formed by the combination of a dipyramid with pinacoid faces, producing sharp, symmetrical crystal geometry.

Scheelite is inherently fluorescent under short-wave ultraviolet light: pure calcium tungstate glows bright blue-white, while even small amounts of molybdenum substituting for tungsten shift the fluorescence toward a creamy yellow tone, a response that has often been reported in specimens from this same Sichuan locality. As this specific piece has not been tested under a UV lamp, we recommend verifying its fluorescent response directly to confirm this feature.

Because pure Scheelite characteristically glows a bright blue-white under short-wave ultraviolet light, geologists have historically used UV lamps in the field at night to prospect for tungsten ore deposits, scanning rock outcrops for the telltale fluorescent glow.

The Pingwu Beryl Mine on Mount Xuebaoding is widely regarded by mineral collectors as the finest Scheelite locality on Earth, having produced, since the early 1990s, crystals so sharp and richly colored that they redefined what a museum-quality Scheelite specimen could look like. The deposit is a rare combination of tungsten, tin, and beryllium mineralization, meaning fine Scheelite crystals here can be found alongside gem Beryl, Cassiterite, and sparkling Muscovite mica.
